2.James Eric Lynch (1892-1975) was an invertebrate biologist and long-time faculty member of the (then) Department of Fisheries of the University of Washington. Robert R. Stickney, a former Director of the School, wrote a history of the School of Fisheries in which he provides information on Lynches career (Stickney, 1989). A brief chronicle of the School of Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences, based on the book by Stickney, is contained in the School’s web site at www.fish.washington.edu.

3.The papers of the Society are deposited in the Archives of the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, room 217A, Fishery Sciences Building, UW. The Archives contain Society correspondence, papers concerning annual meetings, records relating to other Society business, photographs of Society activities, and the official record books (e.g., Roll and Charter Book, Register Book, and Minute Book). The Society maintains a web site at www.artedi.fish.washington.edu.

4.David Starr Jordan (1851-1931) became the preeminent American ichthyologist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His autobiography Days of a Man (Jordan, 1922) is a veritable gold mine of information on the early history of ichthyology and fisheries in North America, as well as the early history of Leland Stanford, Jr., University. For more information about Jordan, see Myers (1951). For information on Stanford University and its role in American ichthyology, see Brittan (1997). Further information on the history of ichthyology is contained in Pietsch and Anderson (1997).

5.Jordan had great respect for Gilbert as he attested in an obituary he wrote upon Gilbert’s death (Jordan, 1928a). In another article Jordan wrote of Gilbert: "He was one of the most careful and accurate of scientific observers, the keenest and ablest critic of natural history I have ever known, and therefore a most helpful teacher" (Jordan, 1928b).

9.Pietsch to Harris, dated Seattle 21 November 1988, Gilbert Ichthyological Society Archives, 1988 Pre-GIS planning, Folder 1.

10.Throughout this early correspondence there was a current of levity, indicating that fun and good will were among the primary concerns of this new Society.

11.The Charter and Bye-Laws of the Society were drafted by Pietsch. The form and content of these documents were loosely patterned after similar documents used by the Linnaean Society of London, of which Pietsch was a member. T. W. Pietsch, personal communication, 8 November 2000.

12.Dunn (with the encouragement of Pietsch) had recently begun historical research on Charles Henry Gilbert.

13.The inaugural meeting was originally set for 10 February 1989. Apparently for scheduling reasons, the first meeting did not occur until 7 October 1989. See Pietsch to Markle, dated Seattle 14 July 1989; Markle to Pietsch, dated Corvallis 17 August 1989; and Pietsch to Harris, dated Seattle 27 September1989, all in Gilbert Ichthyological Society Archives, Correspondence 1989, Folder 2, File 1. 15.The newly elected members of the Society were collectively "sworn in." Each Fellow was directed to place his/her hand on the "Gilbert Bible," consisting of Volume 13 of the Proceedings of the U.S. National Museum (1890). This volume contains the seminal work of Northeastern Pacific ichthyology, titled "Scientific Results of Explorations by the U.S. Fish Commission Steamer Albatross. XII. A Preliminary Report on Fishes Collected by the Steamer Albatross on the Pacific Coast of North America during the year 1889, with descriptions of twelve new genera and ninety-two new species" by Charles Henry Gilbert. The Fellows recited the following obligation:

"I who have hereunto subscribed, do hereby promise that I will endeavor to promote the Good of THE GILBERT ICHTHYOLOGICAL SOCIETY, and to pursue the Ends for which the same was instituted; That I will be present at the meetings of the Society, as often as I possibly can, especially upon extraordinary Occasions; and that I will observe the Statues, Bye-Laws, and Orders of the said Society so help me CHARLES HENRY GILBERT. All this provided that, should I desire to withdraw from the Society, I may signify as such in writing to the President, and I shall be free from this Obligation for the future."

25.Dunn was introduced by "Trevor Kincaid" (1872-1968), Chairman of the Department of Zoology, UW, in 1909 (a role played by Ted Pietsch). The tone of the evening’s meeting was reflected in the introduction by Kincaid (i.e., Pietsch). "It is my pleasure to introduce Professor Gilbert of Leland Stanford Junior University. Dr. Gilbert is one of the leading ichthyologists of the world, having described hundreds of new species of fishes, some 152 in the eastern North Pacific Ocean alone. I like Dr. Gilbert—he named a lovely little sculpin after me, Malacocottus kincaidi Gilbert and Thompson 1905. Dr. Gilbert has lately turned his attention to the important salmon resources of the eastern North Pacific, attempting to understand the life-cycles, ages, etc. of these remarkable fishes. And with some success! He believes he can now tell the ages of these fishes—the time spent in freshwater before migrating to sea and the age at maturity when they re-enter freshwater to spawn. But enough of that! Let us hear from Dr. Gilbert." Gilbert Ichthyological Society Archives, Annual Meeting notes 1989, Folder 2, File 2.

27.Gilbert Ichthyological Society Archives, 1990 Meeting Announcement, Folder 3, File 1. The availability of a keg of beer for new arrivals became a GIS tradition. The format for the Oregon meeting generally established a pattern for subsequent meetings. A "social" is routinely held on Friday evening, followed by a Business Meeting. Saturday is devoted to formal contributed papers followed by a banquet that evening. Departure is Sunday morning.

28.Generally more people attend the scientific paper sessions than the business meetings of the Society. Therefore the Annual Meeting attendance numbers presented in this paper likely represent a minimum.

29.Gilbert Ichthyological Society Archives, Annual Meeting minutes for 1990, Minute Book. Correspondence in the Society archives revealed that the abbreviation of the Society Fellows, originally FGS for Fellows of the Gilbert Society, changed in 1990 to FGIS, Fellows of the Gilbert Ichthyological Society.

31.Dorothy Thomlinson Gilbert (1929-) is the family historian and has many stories about the "Gilberts" that she recalled for me. The Gilberts were fully supportive of my historical research on Charles Henry and provided photographs and other archival materials as well other material support for my research.

32.Ted Pietsch adapted the Society’s original logo from the logo of The Linnaean Society of London. Pietsch then decided that an original and more specifically appropriate logo was needed. T. W. Pietsch, personal communication, 22 November 2000. Pietsch asked for the assistance of an illustrator from Dan Cohen at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. Cohen to Harris dated Los Angeles 15 February 1991. Gilbert Ichthyological Society Archives, 1991 Correspondence, Folder 4, File 1. The result of Cohen’s efforts was not satisfactory to the membership. Gilbert Ichthyological Society Archives, 1991 Annual Meeting minutes, Minute Book. Pietsch subsequently contacted Susan A. Point, an artist in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, to design a new logo (Fig. 18). Pietsch to Point, dated Seattle 9 August 1991, Gilbert Ichthyological Society Archives, 1991 Correspondence, Folder 4, File 1. A brief biography of Point is on the GIS Web Site at http://artedi.fish.washington.edu/GIS/artist.html. For information about Point, see Wyatt (2000). The costs of the design and production of the logo were borne by Ted Pietsch. Subsequently, Pietsch arranged for "Tee" shirts, sweatshirts, and coffee cups bearing the logo of the Society, and he again paid the cost of these items.

In December 1990 the meetings were shifted to the preparation room of the Fish Collection, Fisheries Teaching and Research Building (UW). Gilbert Ichthyological Society Archives, 1990 Monthly Meeting notes, Folder 3, File 3.

38.Fellow Wayne Palsson hosted a Chapter meeting at his house in August. A barbecue salmon was featured, as was the use of Palsson’s swimming pool. Gilbert Ichthyological Society Archives, 1990 Monthly Meeting notes, Folder 3, File 3.

39.These latter items were paid, at no small cost, primarily out of the pocket of Ted Pietsch. Based on observation by the author; minutes were not recorded for these monthly meetings.

40.The payment by the Society to Mrs. Shanahan for her calligraphy service was 1 Pound Sterling per year. Shanahan to Dunn, dated Redmond, Washington, 12 March 1990. Dunn to Shanahan, dated Seattle 16 March 1990. Gilbert Ichthyological Society Archives, Correspondence 1990, Folder 3 File 1.

45.Palsson's memo to all GIS Fellows described the purpose of the expedition and cautioned that "participating members must come with appropriate collecting gear: boots, lab coat, dip net, field note book, identification guides, and anything else you can dream up." Palsson further wrote "We will tentatively identify each specimen and will acquire one of each for the UW collection." Later, Palsson noted that "A sorting and cataloging will be the subject of the regular meeting on April 5th." Palsson to All GIS members dated Seattle 22 March 1991. 46.The press release provided by Palsson to the manager of the store, Mark l. Pahlow, was duly published in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on 28 March 1991. The article read:

"Fish enthusiasts: The Archie McPhee and Co. store will host a fish inspection at 1 p.m. Monday at 3510 Stone Way N. Attendees can meet fish experts from Seattle's Gilbert Ichthyological Society, who will help identify the genus and species of various anatomically correct replicas of rare and unusual fish now available at the store."

Of the Honorary Members

Sect. 1. The number of Honorary Members shall not exceed twelve.

Sect. 2. When a vacancy shall occur in the number of Honorary Members, the Fellows shall at the next or any succeeding Meeting of the Society as they see fit, elect by Open Vote, unless two or more Members demand a written Ballot, a distinguished Personage to fill each vacancy; provided that no such Personage shall be considered as elected unless two-thirds of the number of Fellows present shall have voted in the affirmative.

Sect 3. As soon as may be after the election of any Honorary Member, the President of the Society shall announce such election to him or her by letter and at the same time transmit to him or her a Diploma under the Common Seal of the Society, as well as a printed copy of the Charter and Bye-Laws, and a List of members of the Society.
